Hands-on learning in medicine, fashion, business, esports and more empowers over 300 youth this summer

The classrooms of 51�Թ� buzzed with curiosity, creativity, and connection as over 300 students from across Berks County gathered for the 2025 Momentum Makers Summer Camp, an initiative of the university’s Total Experience Learning (TExpL)® Institute, which empowers students through hands-on, interdisciplinary learning that connects student interest with classroom knowledge and real-world applications.

Students in grades 5 through 12 explored campus for four weeks of immersive, hands-on programming. From performing mock surgeries with real hospital technology to designing sustainable clothing and pitching business ideas, students experienced a world of opportunity—often for the first time.

"My daughter most enjoyed the opportunity to engage in activities and experiences that otherwise would not have been available to her," said Gina Manidis, parent of a Momentum Makers participant. "Each day she came home eager to share her experiences, from learning with wonderful professionals to trying new skills like robotic surgery and culinary arts. The program not only boosted her confidence, creativity, and problem-solving, but also inspired her to consider future career paths.”

Daily and weekly seminars covered a broad range of topics—medical science, culinary arts, sustainability, fashion design, eSports, law, business and visual arts—giving students freedom to explore both career interests and creative passions. Many experiences were led in collaboration with industry professionals, including staff from Reading Hospital and regional businesses and entrepreneurs.

One student described the program as “the best part of my summer,” after learning how to sew a dress, create her own business pitch, and explore sustainable fashion in just a few days. Another said using a surgical robot at Reading Hospital “made me want to be a doctor for real.”

Creating opportunity was central to the camp’s mission. Through the generous support of the Unger Family Fund of Berks County Community Foundation, the , and , many students were able to attend at low or no cost. Additionally, extra camp meals donated by were redirected to Alvernia’s food pantry, Clare’s Cupboard and , supporting college students and residents facing food insecurity.

“Momentum Makers is about more than summer camp,” said Tanner Schnovel, Director of Student Programming for Total Experience Learning. “It’s a launchpad for curiosity, confidence, and community. We’re showing students that they can shape their futures—and giving them the tools to start now.”

Following the success of this year’s program, the institute plans to expand Momentum Makers career-focused offerings. Students can also participate in after-school workshops and focused after-school research time on campus.
