Literature does more than prepare students for careers in a variety of fields; it equips learners with skills that are crucial to success in any endeavor. A traditional liberal arts major, Alvernia's Literature program offers students opportunities for self-knowledge and growth as they explore the ideas of great writers of past and present. Reading those works promotes development of high level communication skills while enhancing depth of knowledge across disciplines. Interpreting and deconstructing ideas helps students to shape their world-views while refining skills in logic, reasoning and conceptual analysis.
The Psych/MACC degree is designed for students who wish to become ethical professional counselors skilled in treating mental health and addiction disorders. The psychology major can be followed as a 3+3 curricular track leading to potential matriculation into the MACC program in the senior year.
Political Science isn’t just for students who aspire to work in government. Those seeking careers in law, business, journalism, teaching, or nonprofits benefit from understanding policy and politics. Alvernia students have an opportunity to earn college credit by spending a semester or summer in Washington, D.C., competing on the Mock Trial Team, serving as interns in a congressional office, government agency, major corporation, newspaper or news network, or agencies devoted to legal affairs, international relations, or business and economics.
Mathematics is one of Alvernia's highest paying and most sought after majors. Furthermore, math majors consistently score high on entrance exams for medical school and law school. Majoring in math will teach students critical thinking, and quantitative and analytical skills that are in high demand by employers.
Alvernia's class sizes are capped at 24 for lower-level courses and are typically much lower in upper-level courses. Though content-heavy, the major is credit-light. Alvernia’s Early Childhood Education (PK-4) and Special Education (PK-12) Certifications dual major unlocks an unlimited career potential. The program prepares teachers for preschool through Grade 4 and special education teachers in public and private educational institutions. The program is approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The dual certification allows program graduates to work as:
• Elementary educators (preschool though Grade 4)
• Special education teachers and learning support specialists (preschool though Grade 12)
in public and private educational institutions.
Alvernia's biology program and its enthusiastic faculty are dedicated to providing students with a framework to excel in any biological field. Students work closely with faculty to develop critical thinking skills and analytical techniques to be successful in their future careers as scientists. The laboratory spaces expose students to equipment and instrumentation for examining cells and tissues, isolating and manipulating DNA and protein, growing and analyzing microbes, and analyzing metabolites in plants and other organisms.
Biology majors can also enter into the 3+2 Physician Associate Program and have the opportunity to complete a bachelor’s and master’s degree in 5 years.

This bridge program is designed specifically for licensed OTAs who want to become occupational therapists.
