Optometrists play an essential role in promoting health and quality of life by preserving vision, detecting eye disease, and supporting overall wellness. The Pre-Professional Pre-Optometry program at 51³Ô¹Ï prepares students for admission to schools and colleges of optometry through individualized advising, a strong foundation in the sciences, and opportunities for experiential learning. With guidance on prerequisite coursework and professional preparation, students gain the knowledge and skills needed to pursue a career dedicated to protecting sight and enhancing the well-being of their patients.
In the 51³Ô¹Ï tradition, theatre students learn the importance of diversity of thought, faiths and cultures. Students are challenged to shape and transform the world as ethical leaders, concerned citizens and caring members of the greater community.
51³Ô¹Ï's Master of Education programs hold the highest standards of academic excellence as they prepare caring, highly qualified candidates who are uniquely positioned to address various needs of the diverse populations in today's schools. The programs feature multiple degree tracks, each approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education and the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
Alvernia's post-baccalaureate certification programs for educators are approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Certification coursework may be applied to earning a Master of Education or Ph.D. in Leadership degree. Individual courses may be taken as Act 48 credits.
Alvernia’s Early Childhood Education (PK-4) and Special Education (PK-12) Certifications dual major unlocks an unlimited career potential. The program prepares teachers for preschool through Grade 4 and special education teachers in public and private educational institutions. The program is approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The dual certification allows program graduates to work as:
• Elementary educators (preschool though Grade 4)
• Special education teachers and learning support specialists (preschool though Grade 12)
in public and private educational institutions.
51³Ô¹Ï offers a wide range of minors, which are optional programs of study that complement or supplement students' majors. They typically require 18-21 credits. Learn more about our offerings below.
Alvernia's biology program and its enthusiastic faculty are dedicated to providing students with a framework to excel in any biological field. Students work closely with faculty to develop critical thinking skills and analytical techniques to be successful in their future careers as scientists. The laboratory spaces expose students to equipment and instrumentation for examining cells and tissues, isolating and manipulating DNA and protein, growing and analyzing microbes, and analyzing metabolites in plants and other organisms.
Biology majors can also enter into the 3+2 Physician Associate Program and have the opportunity to complete a bachelor’s and master’s degree in 5 years.
Are you a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) ready to take your career to the next level? 51³Ô¹Ï’s COTA-to-MSOT Bridge Program provides a seamless pathway from your Associate Degree to a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) through the Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Science. This bridge program is designed specifically for licensed OTAs who want to become occupational therapists.
Alvernia’s digital media marketing major combines business, communication and graphic design to give graduates triple advantages in the job market. The program was ranked No. 4 in TechGuide's 2024 list of Bachelor's in Digital Marketing degree programs. TechGuide's ranking process considers factors such as tuition, student-to-faculty ratio, admission and graduation rates and alumni success.
Pioneers in the mental health and addictions field of study, Alvernia aims to meet the rising need in social services driven by societal issues through its Master of Social Work (MSW) graduate program, developed with a specialized clinical practice in behavioral health. Topics of mental health and addiction are covered in human behavior, practice, research and policy courses. Fieldwork placements will offer students an opportunity to further their understanding of addiction and mental health through direct practice.
