Environmental Science Major

Maintaining a habitable planet Earth is essential for our survival. Alvernias Environmental Science program provides students with an interdisciplinary foundation in the natural sciences to understand current environmental challenges and their potential solutions. The curriculum explores terrestrial, aquatic and built environments in the context of a rapidly changing climate and offers students experiential learning opportunities locally and abroad.

Biology Major

Alvernia's Biology program and its enthusiastic faculty are dedicated to providing students with a framework to excel in any biological field. Students work closely with faculty to develop critical thinking skills and analytical techniques to be successful in their future careers as scientists.

Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership

More than assembling a series of skills, leadership graduates develop a series of transferable competencies and, using real-world experience, become Leaders for Life. The Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership prepares professionals to meet the unique leadership challenges of the 21st century and effectively lead teams, groups, and organizations in a complex and dynamic global environment.

Community and Environmental Sustainability Minor

The minor in Community and Environmental Sustainability is intended to supplement any major at Alvernia, establishing connections across disciplines and preparing students to incorporate sustainable thinking and practices into a variety of future careers.

Faculty-Student Project

Mikey Pierce

Senior biology major Michael (Mikey) Pierce has been jumping into frigid streams this winter to help scientists monitor the health of our local waters. Mikey and assistant professor of biology Jamie Becker are helping maintain several solar-powered sensors in Angelica Creek and Punches Run that continuously record essential information, including temperature, turbidity, and water depth. Researchers use data obtained by these sensors to ensure our local waters stay clean and healthy.
